When it comes to celebrity weddings, George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin’s might just take the cake.
So it’s only fitting that the stunning bride and groom had one gorgeous confection to celebrate their nuptials.
During the evening reception at the Aman Canal Grande in Venice, the couple’s grand, 4-tiered, square-style cake sat perched on a round table surrounded by votive candles. Designed to coordinate with the wedding’s elegant surroundings, the chocolate cake was “gold art deco to match the dining room,” Clooney tells PEOPLE exclusively in the magazine’s new issue.
In lieu of a traditional cake topper, the top tier was accented with a decorative sugar piece, also made in the classic art deco style.
With tradition being an important part of the couple’s ceremony and reception, the newlyweds jointly sliced into sugary confection in front of relatives and close friends.
“It was very emotional and lovely,” said Bono of the wedding, which he attended along with Matt Damon and his wife, Luciana, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, Bill Murray and other close friends and family.
With all the eating and drinking that went on during the wedding weekend, let’s hope the about 100 guests saved room for dessert — because it looks like there was more than enough for seconds. Or fifths.
